    What are placements? Primary Care Academy find suitable placement opportunities for students who want to gain experience in or are seeking a career in primary and community care. Placements form a valuable part of their learning experience. It enables students to gain real-life skills and knowledge that will support their course objectives and career development. Placements vary in length depending on individual course requirements. HMRPCA works in partnership with Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the region and Greater Manchester Training Hub to support student placements across a range of courses. As well as looking at innovative ways to promote primary care as a career destination What are place-based tariffs/placement tariffs? Some student placements that are hosted by a GP Practice, or other community-based organisation, comes with a placement tariff. The hosting organisation is known as the placement provider. The tariff is a payment of money that is paid to the placement provider. It is set by NHSE to acknowledge the staff time taken to supervise and train the student. Currently this can take over 12 months to be paid to placement providers. Become a learning environment? HMRPCA would like to encourage all GP Practices and social care homes in Heywood, Middleton & Rochdale to consider offering a student placement. We feel the local areas offer excellent examples of primary and community care provision. Offering a placement encourages students to remain in the county after graduation. They will be prescribers, or if not, can complete an independent prescribing qualification following completion of the 18-month Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) pathway. They work with and alongside the general practice team, taking responsibility for patients with chronic diseases and undertaking clinical medication reviews to proactively manage people with complex polypharmacy, especially for the elderly, people in care homes and those with multiple comorbidities. www.healthcareers.nhs.uk Pharmacist Pay and benefits If you work in the NHS, for example in a hospital or a GP practice, you’ll usually start on band 6 of the Agenda for Change pay scale. As your NHS career progresses, you could reach band 9 as a chief pharmacist.  You’ll also get at least 27 days of annual leave plus bank holidays which increases after five years of service, as well as the NHS pension scheme. If you’re working in a sector such as a community pharmacy, pay and benefits may differ but are typically in line with the NHS agenda for change pay rates. Patients and other organisations need to be able to contact the NHS, to see or speak to the right person who can give them the help they need. That could be booking an appointment, getting advice or paying an invoice. Administration roles include: clerk health records staff receptionist secretary/typist medical secretary/personal assistant telephonist/switchboard operator For any admin role, you need a good standard of literacy and numeracy. Employers usually ask for GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and maths. IT skills and qualifications are useful too as so many NHS systems are IT-based now. You’ll be using your skills in time management, organisation and communication in any admin role. There are plenty of opportunities to gain further qualifications and move on in your career. You could stay in administration, perhaps by becoming a team leader or supervisor. You could go on to become an administration manager. You could also move into other wider healthcare roles, too. If you like figures, you could use your skills and experience to move into finance. Or if you’re keen on IT you could move into informatics.
