Placements form a valuable part of their learning experience. It enables students to gain real-life skills and knowledge that will support their course objectives and career development.

Placements vary in length depending on individual course requirements.

HMRPCA works in partnership with Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the region and Greater Manchester Training Hub to support student placements across a range of courses. As well as looking at innovative ways to promote primary care as a career destination

What are place-based tariffs/placement tariffs?

Some student placements that are hosted by a GP Practice, or other community-based organisation, comes with a placement tariff. The hosting organisation is known as the placement provider.

The tariff is a payment of money that is paid to the placement provider. It is set by NHSE to acknowledge the staff time taken to supervise and train the student. Currently, this can take over 12 months to be paid to placement providers.

​HMRPCA would like to encourage all GP Practices and social care homes in Heywood, Middleton & Rochdale to consider offering a student placement. We feel the local areas offer excellent examples of primary and community care provision.

Offering a placement encourages students to remain in the county after graduation. This in turn supports local workforce planning.

Become an NMC Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor

In 2018, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) introduced new Standards for Student Supervision & Assessment (SSSA,) which includes the requirement that all NMC registrants should be ‘suitably prepared to undertake the role of student supervision and assessment as part of the nursing role.

Become a wider workforce supervisor

If you are a GP or working at Advanced practitioner level, you can attend the Wider Workforce Supervisor course to be able to supervise the wider workforce in primary care. This is currently run Via GM training hub Wider Workforce Clinical Supervisor’s Course and Foundation Doctor’s Supervision – Greater Manchester Training Hub
